Remark
Here are 2 reds and a hearty gewurztraminer suitable for autumn fare– grilled, roasted or braised. The reds are tips of good value in lesser-known regions of Tuscany and listed below the luxury level of Bordeaux. From Portugal’s Douro Valley, a region known for reds and fortified Ports, comes a major white with depth and complexity.
Sassoregale Sella Antica Rosso 2020(2 stars)
This white wine hails from the Maremma, a rustic part of Tuscany near the coast, away from the traveler trail of Florence and Siena, south of the cult red wine location of Bolgheri. That implies worth. This red blend, based upon cabernet sauvignon and red wine, is juicy and spicy. It doesn’t shout “Tuscan” in a manner that speaks of terroir, however it does bring pleasure with its verve and texture. Alcohol by volume: 14 percent. Bottle weight: 510 grams (Average).

Château La Mothe du Barry Boreaux Supérieur 2020(3.5 stars )
The rate is creeping up– just like everything, unfortunately– but this label from Joël Duffau continues to reveal why standard Bordeaux supplies everyday worth. This is 100 percent merlot, grown naturally and not gussied up with oak or other flavors. ABV: 14 percent. BW: 420 grams (Light).

This gewurztraminer comes from one of my preferred wineries in Portugal’s Douro Valley. The grapes are grown in the Douro Superior, a rugged area up river near the Spanish border. The blend is viosinho and verdelho, if you’re keeping an eye on ranges you’ve attempted. 6 months of barrel aging gives the white wine a little heft and depth, but the secret here is freshness. Even five years after the vintage, this red wine is vibrant and energetic. It ought to age well if you can resist opening it. ABV: 13.5 percent. BW; 495 grams (Light).
